Tactical Chest Rig · Gorpcore · Unisex · All-Black
“The chest rig format has a specific logic that other carry formats don’t share. A backpack puts weight behind the center of gravity and requires two-handed access — you stop moving, shrug one shoulder, swing the bag around, open it, retrieve the item, and reverse the sequence. A waist pack sits low and can shift during movement. The chest rig keeps carried weight directly in front of the sternum — inside your center of gravity rather than behind it — which affects balance differently than rear-mounted load, particularly during trail running where the forward-leaning posture of running means a chest-mounted load sits closer to the body’s actual movement axis. Access is single-handed and does not require stopping: the zipper pulls are positioned on the front face of the rig and can be operated with one hand while continuing to move. The format is borrowed from tactical and military load-bearing equipment, where hands-free, front-access carrying under active conditions is a functional requirement rather than a stylistic choice. The Gorpcore aesthetic has adopted the chest rig format not just as a fashion signifier but because it is genuinely useful: the vest sits stable on the chest during running and hiking, doesn’t swing or shift like a waist pack, and keeps items accessible without the commitment of stopping and removing a backpack. The American flag patch on this vest is removable via Velcro on the MOLLE webbing panel, so the attachment point can be used for any Velcro-backed patch if a different aesthetic is preferred.”

📋 What Fits in the Main Compartment

Phone: The 24cm / 9.45in width and 15.5cm / 6.1in pouch height accommodates most modern smartphones up to large screen sizes (phones up to approx. 17×8cm / 6.7×3.15in should fit comfortably in the front-facing pocket). A phone in a thin case will fit; a phone in a thick protective case may be a tight fit depending on the specific case dimensions.

Running essentials: Keys, cards, cash, a folded energy gel packet, earbuds in a small case, and a lip balm fit easily alongside a phone. The rig is not designed for carrying water (no hydration bladder compatibility or bottle pockets), so plan your water carry separately for longer runs.

Trail and hike carry: For day hikes, the rig can carry a folded lightweight emergency layer, a small first aid kit, a power bank, a folded map, and cards/phone/keys. It is not a substitute for a daypack on longer multi-hour hikes but works well as a front-carry complement to a daypack for organizing frequently accessed items.

EDC: For everyday carry in urban contexts, the rig accommodates a small wallet, phone, earbuds case, keys on the D-ring, and small personal items. The MOLLE webbing panel accepts additional Velcro and MOLLE accessories for expansion.

Construction

🔧 Built for Active Use. What Each Feature Does.

⚫
Polyester ShellPolyester is the dominant fabric choice for load-bearing gear that needs to be lightweight, abrasion-resistant, and resistant to moisture absorption. The woven polyester shell of this vest resists surface moisture and dries quickly compared to natural fiber alternatives. The ripstop or high-denier construction (visible in the woven texture of the face fabric) provides resistance to tearing under the load stress of filled compartments during active movement.
💨
Perforated Mesh PanelsThe chest-facing back panel (the side in contact with your torso when worn) is a perforated mesh construction. This serves two functions: it allows airflow between the vest and the chest/back, reducing heat and moisture buildup during active use; and it reduces the total weight of the vest compared to a solid-panel construction. The perforations are visible in the product images as a dot pattern across the back interior face of the vest.
🔖
MOLLE Webbing + Velcro PanelMOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) is a standardized webbing system used in military and tactical gear to allow modular attachment of additional pouches and accessories. The front face of this vest has horizontal MOLLE-compatible webbing rows with a central Velcro-backed panel. The Velcro panel accepts any standard Velcro-backed patch — the American flag patch included is attached via this Velcro, so it can be removed and replaced with any alternative patch of the same format.
⚡
Reflective StripsHorizontal reflective strips are integrated into the front face of the main pocket panel. These are retroreflective — they return light back toward the source (car headlights, a head torch) at low angles, making the wearer more visible from the front to approaching traffic or other trail users in low-light conditions. Trail running at dawn, dusk, or night are the primary use cases where this feature provides meaningful safety benefit.
🔓
Quick-Release BucklesShoulder straps are secured with quick-release (QR) side-release buckles on both sides. These allow the vest to be put on and removed rapidly with a single press on each buckle, without needing to thread or unthread straps. The waist/lower strap also uses a snap buckle for lower-body stabilization that prevents the vest from moving vertically during running. All buckles are adjustable for torso size and chest measurement.
🔖
D-Ring Carabiner PointA D-ring is positioned at the lower front of the vest. This accepts a carabiner (included or add-on) for attaching keys, a small clip-on tool, or for securing the rig to a fixed point. The D-ring is a standard load-rated attachment point in tactical gear and can take a meaningful mechanical load without deformation under normal use conditions.

Use Cases

🏃 Where and How to Wear It.

🏃Trail RunningThe primary design use case. Front-mount weight keeps load inside the running body’s center of gravity. No rear swing, no shoulder bounce. One-hand zipper access for phone, gels, or keys without stopping. Use alongside a hydration vest or handheld for water carry on longer routes.
🏔️HikingWorks as a front-carry companion to a backpack: keep frequently accessed items (phone, snacks, cards, map, small first aid) in the chest rig and larger gear in the pack. Eliminates the need to stop and open the backpack for small items mid-trail.
🌎TravelAs a hands-free front carry alternative to a crossbody bag or neck wallet. Keeps documents, cards, and phone front-facing and visually guarded against pickpocketing. Adjustable straps fit over most jacket and coat layers.
🏭Urban EDCGorpcore aesthetic in city context. Pairs with technical outerwear, fleece, or streetwear. Replace or remove the flag patch for a cleaner aesthetic. MOLLE webbing accepts custom patches and accessories for personalization.
🌿Festival & EventsKeeps valuables front-facing and secure in crowded environments. Zip-close compartments are harder to access by others than open tote bags or back pockets. The reflective strips provide passive visibility at night events.
🆕PhotographyA compact front-carry option for a phone, compact camera, extra battery, or lens cloth. The front-access zipper allows retrieval without removing a shoulder bag or stopping a walk.

Fit Guide

👏 Adjusting for Your Size. Shoulder, Chest & Waist.

01Loosen All StrapsBefore putting on the vest, loosen all shoulder and waist straps fully. This makes it easier to pull over your head and position correctly on the chest.
02Position on ChestPull the vest over your head and position the main body centered on your sternum. The perforated mesh back panel should sit against your chest. The vest should cover approximately the upper abdomen to mid-chest area.
03Set Shoulder Strap HeightAdjust both shoulder straps to the same length so the vest body sits flat and centered. The shoulder straps should clear the neck comfortably without chafing at the collar. Fasten the quick-release buckles.
04Tighten Waist StrapFasten and tighten the lower waist/belly strap. This is the primary anti-bounce strap during running — it should be snug enough to prevent the vest from moving vertically when you run, but not so tight it restricts breathing at full exertion.
05Load and RebalanceLoad your essentials and test the fit with the vest loaded. A loaded vest may need minor re-tightening on the shoulder straps compared to the empty-vest fit. The goal is a secure, stable carry where the vest does not bounce or shift during running pace.
06Test Range of MotionMove your arms through a full running arm-swing range. Tighten if any strap is catching movement; loosen if any buckle point is digging in. Adjust iteratively — the vest should feel secure but not restrictive at full running pace arm movement.

FAQ

Common Questions, Answered

Will this fit over a jacket or running vest?

Yes — the adjustable shoulder and waist straps have enough range to accommodate wearing the rig over a thin to mid-weight running jacket, softshell, or base layer. For very bulky insulating layers (puffer jackets, thick fleece) you may need to lengthen all straps significantly, and the fit may be less stable than over a single base layer. The rig is most commonly worn over a single running layer or light jacket. If you plan to use it primarily over a jacket, consider sizing the strap fit with that layer on rather than fitting it bare-chested.

Can I replace the American flag patch with a different one?

Yes — the American flag patch is attached via a Velcro-backed Velcro loop panel on the MOLLE webbing section of the front face. Any standard Velcro-backed patch (hook-and-loop backing) of an appropriate size will adhere to this panel. The MOLLE webbing rows surrounding the Velcro panel also accept MOLLE-compatible pouches and accessories. If no patch is preferred, the Velcro panel can be left bare.

Is it water-resistant?

The polyester shell provides surface moisture resistance — light rain and splash will bead off the face fabric. It is not a waterproof product: sustained rain, full submersion, or heavy downpour will eventually wet through the material and reach the contents. For regular rainy trail running, consider a small internal dry bag or zip-lock bag for your phone and cards as a simple waterproofing measure for the contents. The zippers are not waterproof-rated.

Does it bounce when running?

Bounce is primarily controlled by the waist/lower strap. When the lower strap is snug and the shoulder straps are properly tensioned, vertical bounce is minimal at most running paces — the vest stays stable because the waist strap anchors the bottom of the rig to the torso. If you experience bounce, the first adjustment is to tighten the lower waist strap — this is usually the solution before adjusting shoulder straps. A heavily loaded vest will always bounce more than a lightly loaded one; keep carry weight minimal on the run for best stability.

Can women wear this comfortably?

Yes — the design is fully unisex and the adjustable shoulder and waist straps accommodate a wide range of body shapes and sizes. The adjustability of the straps means the rig can be fitted across both narrower and wider shoulder widths, and tighter or looser across different chest measurements. Some women find that a chest rig vest sits slightly differently than on a male body due to chest geometry — the main practical consideration is that the shoulder strap width and the spacing between the straps may need precise adjustment at the shoulder crossover point to sit comfortably without the straps sliding inward. Adjust the straps methodically with the rig loaded to the weight you plan to carry, and re-test at running pace before your first trail use.

Customer Reviews

I’ve Tried Three Different Chest Rigs for Trail Running and This Is the First One That Didn’t Bounce at 5K Pace.

★★★★★
Marcus D. Denver, CO — Trail Runner

“I’ve tried three different chest rigs for trail running and this is the first one that didn’t bounce at 5K pace once I got the waist strap tight. The perforated back panel makes a real difference in the summer heat compared to my previous solid-back vest — significantly less sweating at the contact point. The MOLLE webbing is a nice touch because I added a small MOLLE zippered pouch to the side for an additional pocket. The flag patch is removable which I did immediately for a cleaner all-black look. Good build quality for the price — zippers feel solid, buckles click positively. Will buy a second one for a training partner.”

★★★★★
Taryn F. Portland, OR — Hiker / Gorpcore

“Bought this primarily for the gorpcore aesthetic but ended up actually using it for its intended purpose because it’s genuinely functional. I wear it over a fleece on day hikes to hold my phone, cards, and snacks while my pack carries the bulk. The one-hand front-access zipper is something I didn’t know I needed until I started using it — getting to my phone on the trail without stopping or removing a shoulder bag is a completely different experience. The reflective strips are visible at dawn and dusk which I didn’t expect to care about but ended up being useful on early morning hikes. The all-black aesthetic is exactly right for the gorpcore look I was building.”

★★★★★
Jin K. Los Angeles, CA — Urban EDC / Travel

“I’ve worn this on two international trips as an anti-pickpocket carry for my passport, cards, and phone in crowded train stations and markets. The front-facing position means your valuables are always in your sightline and the zips require two-handed operation to open (your own hands, that is), which is a real deterrent in crowded environments. The rig fits under a light jacket when I need a low-profile look and is comfortable over a t-shirt in warmer weather. The adjustable straps accommodated both my base layer and a light down jacket without problem. The MOLLE webbing is a bonus — I attached a small flashlight clip to it. Solid product at this price.”
